a billion v 4.7 billion?

THIS IS NOT A FAILD BLOG

Well, depends on what you mean by a "failed blog." It might be considered such if we were looking for non family eye balls, but it is a pretty good way to get to several Hechts with non emergency messages over the next few days.

It also has other advantages, if I posted this to Facebook lots of eye balls would see it and then I could be revealing to much about myself, my penthouse could be robbed.

I am arriving at EWR aka Newark at 7:26 pm assuming I am on Delta flight 5074 from DTW aka Detroit/Wayne and it arrives on time.

I sent this out to most Hechts in an email about two weeks ago but when I talked to Dad last night he seemed confused and said he would tell someone to look at the email and get back to me because he hardly read or sent email any more.

So bottom line this, any chance of someone picking me up at the airport Thursday night?

Thoughts on Ross Douthat's Op Ed "Return of the Jesus Wars"

Over most of the past twenty years HRH and I would often discuss theology. If our Sunday night conversations were not a review of the weeks world and national events, they were on what we picked up and thought of various Sunday services that one or the other of us had heard. So it is with great interest that I read what will be published in Sunday's dead tree edition of the nyt.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/08/04/opinion/sunday/douthat-return-of-the-j...

to keep things simple i will avoid my take on this, or for that matter pleasent suprise at Douthat's balance in talking about the issue. What I find most interesting is the sucsess of Aslan's book based not on an interest that otherwise would have driven it to the top of the best seller list, but because of the publicity the book received after a typical fox interview

"Those minutes were spent with the interviewer, Lauren Green, asking Aslan to explain why a Muslim would write a book about Jesus — with Aslan coolly emphasizing his credentials and the non-Islamic nature of his argument — and then with Green asking variations on the Muslim question, to increasing offense and diminishing returns.

I doubt it is Lisa's favorite word, but this article might be interesting to several of the half dozen readers of this blog, if we still have that many eyes.

Thank You Alice and Toshi

My Mom turns 84 Today! Perhaps the greatest thing she has ever done for me is turn me on to Pete Seeger. I am a Seegerist. The world can be a better place and we can learn love and understanding not just of ourselves, but the world and each other through music. Pete's wife died Tuesday 7 days shy of their 70th Wedding Anniversary. About 60 Years ago she wrote 5 verses to Turn, Turn, Turn that you might not know. If you are a parent of a young child, or just want to reconnect with the young child in you, you might what to give a listen, the new verses start at about 6 min in to a song you know the words to all ready:

Two Structural Problems with The Publicans and the Presidency

Many have said that the Electoral College is now to the advantage of the Dems

Here is another structural problem

Of 147 Potential Presidential Candidates most if not all are either too far along on the Crazy Train to be electied, or because they have shown they are capable of thinking and even the slightest compromise, unelectable in the Publican Primaries

When We Were In Hawai'i

I was talking to my brother a few years ago when we were in Hawai'i we decided that Hawai'i was the most unique state in the union. He then agreed that Alaska was second, and more reluctantly agreed that after that was Texas. We gave up after that, but I have an idea NM would be high on the list. WTF is up with this:

Our Changing Media

Since so many on this site seem to be interested in the "biased and balanced" reporting of this rag and disagree with my idea that Media has changed for the worse, I present this:

http://dish.andrewsullivan.com/2013/03/20/our-changing-media/

It is the idea of the article that even when we know that Fox and MSNBC are biased and unbalanced that really doesn't matter because we have so many more choices. I strongly disagree because this allows so many of us to live in our own bubbles. How many search out other sources, other ideas, other beliefs?

The article does point out as I long have, while on a national, even state if one cares to, it is possible to actually get more information about what is going on. IF YOU CHOOSE TO AND IF YOU HAVE THE TIME. The article also points out that local governments, school boards etc are virtually getting off doing what ever they feel like.
