Bucky loses bowl game - again!

Four straight New Year's Day bowl losses...

copyright David Stluka

The Badgers (9-4) lost their fourth straight bowl game, failing to capitalize on 100-yard rushing games from both Melvin Gordon and James White, and struggling after quarterback Joel Stave left in the third quarter with a shoulder injury.

Wisconsin led 14-13 at the half, scoring on a pair of touchdown passes by Stave.

UW's White and Gordon became the first pair of teammates from an FBS team to each rush for 1,400 yards in the same season. Gordon finished his sophomore season with 1,609 rushing yards - the eighth-best total in UW history - while White amassed 1,444 in his senior year.

Oh well, 9-4 is still a respectable record. It's not like that Midwest Conference school 55 miles to the south!

Rodgers rallies Packers past Bears, into playoffs

Rodgers completes a 48-yard touchdown pass to Randall Cobb with 38 seconds to play, and the Packers claimed their third consecutive NFC North title!

That's 5 playoff appearances in a row as well...

Resolving the Mystery of a Disappearing Mouse Cursor in Mac OS X

In an unusual and fairly rare situation, the Mac cursor becomes invisible. One can still click around on the screen, but is unable to see what the mouse or trackpad is focused on.

This seems to happen out of the blue, and is difficult to reproduce reliably. However, it seems to happen more often when a Mac is running low on available memory, and is using multiple monitors. Thus, you may be more likely to lose the cursor when using apps like Photoshop, or Chrome and Safari with tons of browser tabs open, especially with an external display connected. After running into this bug repeatedly I discovered a few ways to resolve the problem and make the cursor visible again.

If your mouse cursor has mysteriously disappeared in OS X, try the following tricks in descending order to bring it back:

1) Hit Command+Tab to switch back to the Finder or to another app, then switch back to the active app
2) Summon the Force Quit menu by hitting Command+Option+Escape, there is often no need to actually force quit anything as just summoning the menu is often enough to make the cursor return
3) Quit and relaunch the app, or quit all apps if the cursor is gone everywhere

A free weather widget for MacOS...

If you (or someone you know) is obsessed with the weather conditions, and uses a Mac computer, then this is a great menu bar widget.

It allows users total control over their weather viewing, including simultaneous interlaced weather reports from multiple weather locations, weather alerts, and much more.

Badgers advance to championship game!

Four-set upset of Texas brings berth in NCAA championship match

Not many in the sellout crowd for the NCAA volleyball semifinals gave the University of Wisconsin much of a chance against top-seeded and reigning champion Texas.

But among those few true believers were the Badgers, who pulled off a shocking 25-19, 25-18, 26-28, 25-23 victory.

They will face the #2 seed Penn State on Saturday - 9:30 EST on ESPN

Wisconsin - the state whose residents are most likely to ask you to join them in their good times...

The study, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, was an exhaustive one, spanning 13 years and including nearly 1.6 million survey respondents from the 48 contiguous states and the District of Columbia.

"The top scorers on extroversion were the ebullient folks of Wisconsin..."

Here is a link to a summary.

The subjects were asked to take one of three different personality surveys, though the most relevant one was what’s known as the Big Five Inventory.

Take the full test here.

As its name implies, the survey measures personality along five different spectra, with the Openness, Conscientiousness, Extroversion, Agreeableness and Neuroticism labels forming a handy acronym: OCEAN.

Openness: curiosity and a preference for novelty
Conscientiousness:self-discipline and dependability
Extroversion: sociability and gregariousness
Agreeableness: compassion and cooperativeness
Neuroticism: anxiety and anger

Are you trying to lose weight?

I'm thinking about trying the 5:2 diet.

The 5:2 diet works like this: For two non-consecutive days a week you must limit yourself to 500 calories a day (600 for men) and the rest of the time you can eat normally. This concept of the 5:2 diet, or intermittent fasting, works by sending your body into 'repair mode' rather than storing fat (starvation mode), which can happen when you just cut down all together. This 'repair mode' causes the body to restore damaged cells, which uses more energy.

Here is a link to some recipes for the fasting days

GoDaddy "A" and "CNAME" records

GoDaddy has recently constructed a wizard to facilitate A/CNAME record pointing - obviating the need to "lather, rinse, repeat" until one gets it right.

It also accommodates "masking" the destination URL, if desired.

We can do a TeamViewer session if anyone would like a demonstration.

'tis the season

Forced Google Plus integration on YouTube backfires, petition hits 112,000

Google's war on anonymity during its involvement in NSA controversy has imploded as its move to force YouTube commenters to use Google Plus - and its unwanted "real name" policy - has backfired.

On November 6, Google changed its YouTube property to only allow comments from Google Plus accounts, thus de-anonymizing commenters, as the principal element of its site-wide comments overhaul.

Google's move to force Plus onto YouTube has outraged the YouTube community - and beyond.

YouTube user fury is fueling this anti-Plus petition with over 200,000 signatures, increasing by the minute.

At least it distracts from making the downright disturbing connection between Google's Plus tracking and ad-cookie tracking, and the NSA's surveillance programs.

Sockpuppeting and meatpuppeting...

"Wikipedia blames Texas PR firm for skewing hundreds of entries"

It seems a massive sockpuppeting ring has been exposed. Meatpuppeting has been employed by the think tanks for years...

"The firm, Wiki-PR, is believed to have created more than 300 fake accounts used to edit Wikipedia pages — a practice known as "sockpuppeting" — thereby threatening the principles of objectivity and neutrality that the encyclopedia was founded upon."

Packers Giants - backs against the wall!

Spread opened at Giants -3, now at -6.5. Here why the Packers will cover (and win):

It may sound nuts, but third-stringer Scott Tolzien gives Green Bay a real chance to win in this game. Though he did throw two interceptions against the Eagles, he played well in place of Seneca Wallace, going 24 for 39 for 280 yards with a TD strike. With a week to prepare, he might be fine.

Peter, seriously, who are you rooting for in this game?
