The Corporate Pledge of Allegiance

Robert Reich
Tuesday, November 8, 2011

Despite what the Supreme Court and Mitt Romney say, corporations aren’t people. (I’ll believe they are when Georgia and Texas start executing them.)

The Court thinks corporations have First Amendment rights to spend as much as they want on politics, and Romney (and most of his fellow Regressives) think they need lower taxes and fewer regulations in order to be competitive.

These positions are absurd on their face. By flooding our democracy with their shareholders’ money, big corporations are violating their shareholders’ First Amendment rights because shareholders aren’t consulted. They’re simultaneously suppressing the First Amendment rights of the rest of us because, given how much money they’re throwing around, we don’t have enough money to be heard.

And they’re indirectly giving non-Americans (that is, all their foreign owners, investors, and executives) a say in how Americans are governed. Pardon me for being old-fashioned but I didn’t think foreign money was supposed to be funneled into American elections.

Why do you refuse to celebrate your German heritage, PETER?

You missed it yet again...

good news bad news...

Good news (sort of)...

"...we added 103,000 non-farm jobs, the Labor Department announced Friday..."

and bad news...

"...but, unfortunately, lost 1 Jobs as well..."

Note to Bachmann/Tea Party: Your days of claiming the "conservative" mantle are officially over

I personally rescind your (self appointed) monarchy of "conservo"-terrorism.

Teabaggers LOVE talking about that damn big, bloated gummint and how it needs to be cut back. The fact is, they LOVE big gummint and LOVE big business today!

Oh sure, they'll go on and on (waving their guns even) about getting big "gummint" out of the way so that "freedom can just have a chance"! That is, as long as they agree on the issue at hand. That is, as long as the issue isn't about letting a woman choose to control her own body, or letting a person decide how their end of life choices are to be carried out, or whom should be marrying whom, or what substances a person can put in their bodies in the privacy of their own home.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I need to go out and get that Obama-mandated-death-panel-socialist-agenda late term abortion.

With Thanksgiving coming up...

...I thought I'd share the recipe for the best "dressing" that I have tried. It was sent to me by Milos himself, although he told me it is actually his wife's recipe, not his. So forget the "Stove Top" stuffing and try this instead.

STALE DINNER ROLLS (Qts) 1
TURKEY STOCK (Cups) 0.75
BUTTER (Tbsp) 2
DICED CELERY (Cups) 1
CHOPPED ONION (Cups) 1
CHOPPED ROASTED PEANUTS (Cups) 1

It looks like Coloradans that care are making a difference...

I heard that in Colorado, some people are going door to door, and making phone calls, to talk up Michael Bennet. It may be working...

"(In)Colorado two new polls, from Public Policy Polling and SurveyUSA, each show the exact same result, with the Republican, Ken Buck, and the Democrat, Michael Bennet, tied at 47 percent each. Colorado had appeared to slightly favor Mr. Buck for most of the cycle, with his winning chances peaking at 79 percent in our Sept. 30 update. Since then, however, he has endured some decline after a series of minor gaffes, with polls suggesting that Mr. Bennet may have improved his standing among female voters. We now project Colorado’s Senate race to be the closest in the country — slightly closer than others like Nevada or West Virginia. Mr. Buck is now an 0.4-point favorite, according to the model, and his chances of winning are 54 percent.

The Great White Cottontail

Here is the third verse from the Johnny Cash song, "Country Boy"

Country boy got a shaggy dog
Country boy up a holler log

Well he comes in a run when you pick up your gun
And with a shell or two and your dog and you

When you get your rabbit you'll skin his hide
He's gonna be good fried

There was one bunny left in the freezer.

It was the best yet.

Part 4 of 4...

Respect for international law.

When an elected official signs a treaty, agreement, or accord, that signature has to mean something. It has to have integrity. The Commander in Chief cannot choose simply to ignore such documents unilaterally as they see fit.

We (collectively) do not live in a vacuum. For better or for worse, the rest of humanity is here to stay. The world is already too dangerous a place for the latter, and we cannot be so fragile so as not to strive for the former.

Part 3 of 4...

Our society must have some form of social insurance.

No system is perfect, and bad things happen to good people. We must have a "safety net" for those who fall through cracks.

Even the most dumbass, Republic-voting conservative should be able to agree on this.

Perhaps you will need to point out that Henry Ford, himself one of the greatest exploiters of labor ever, failed at business and went bankrupt like eight times before succeeding with his motorcar company.

Part 2 of 4...

Equal access for all.

If you have been elected to public office, then you are there to represent the public's interest. No favors or special access to interests, or constituents; you are there to be the "lobbyist" for the public good.

Part 1 of 4: What liberals and conservatives can agree on...

Even though radcon tea party moron Chris O'Donnell and her ilk don't even know the first amendment exists...

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20101019/ap_on_el_se/us_delaware_senate_9

(He (Coon) noted again the First Amendment's ban on establishment of religion. "That's in the First Amendment?" she said, smiling." "You actually audibly heard the crowd gasp...")

...liberals can find common ground with (true) conservatives in the firm conviction that we must collectively maintain a firewall between religion and government.

We're #1! Again!
