ISIS - Now and then

Interesting how the administrations of President Bush and Obama said similar things.

10 below

I guess it is still going to be winter in Wausau tomorrow morning.

The winters in Santa Fe were never very bad even though it got down below 25 below on morning in February 2011. Obviously, Houston winters were nicer than the summers although the sun set earlier.

It hasn't been that long since 2007-2008 but it seems like an eternity. I am really looking forward to spring.

Obamacare

I think the Supreme Court is going to rule against Obamacare subsidies for federal exchanges.

Bork was correct. The Court shouldn't save the legislature from making stupid laws. It is up to Congress to fix it.

I decided this after listening to Amicus, a blog from Slate. The moderator is a liberal who interviewed two people. One of them talked about the issues. the other one talked about how bad it would be if the Court ruled against Obamacare.

Please listen to it and see who had the better legal arguments.

Mr. Spock

He was amazing

Lesley Gore

I didn't know it at the time but "It's My Party" was written by Wally Gold who was Eric Gold's father who lived on Standish.

I had seen the gold records in his house but I didn't seem impressed by them at all.

He died in 1998 and I lost track of his son long ago.

dwah-hlee sigh-kow-tao from NPR

I never would have guessed how she spelled her name.

She is Lao-Hmong American. She was born in Vientiane, Laos, but raised in France and the United States.

Andrew Sullivan

Andrew Sullivan started in the days when
old people would ask, "What's a blog?"
and ends in the days when
young people ask, "What's a blog?"

Daniel Radosh @danielradosh

Anyway, it is a really sad day for me. I paid $20 a year and now I realize I would pay three times that if he would blog again.

Happy Birthday Lisa

I hope you have a great day

Marcus Borg

http://www.christiancentury.org/blogs/archive/2015-01/marcus-borg-reintr...

This means more to Dad and me than anyone else but Marcus Borg died recently.

He wrote the book "Meeting Jesus again for the first time" (sorry if I butchered the title)

It was a book that I thought Billy should read and he actually read a good deal of it.

It is nice to have my own private blog.

Global Warming is Mom's fault

1956 was a very cold year. There probably will never be as cold a year as 1956.
All of a sudden, 1957 was significantly warmer.

1964 was a very warm year.
All of a sudden 1965 was a very cold year. There probably will never be as cold a year as 1965.

Just sayin

Radio Shack

It seems a little ironic that Radio Shack will declare bankruptcy on AM's birthday weekend.

They are probably waiting for the banks to close so they can keep all the cash and use the weekend to get things in order as best they can.

I will miss them.

GMT

It is 12:05 on January 16 GMT

HAPPY Birthday.

We LOVE you and care about you

Obama wasn't there but they weren't there either

you should see the picture.

I still haven't figured out how much I like Little Green Footballs. He seems to have personal grudges that slant his posts too much.

Computer Poker

http://www.theverge.com/2015/1/8/7516219/Texas-Hold-Em-poker-solved-comp...

It appears that a computer program has figured the perfect strategy for limit hold-em.

I wonder if this means that all of the internet sites allowing gambling on limit hold-em are not going to shut down since humans can't win.

Doesn't this prove, and I mean PROVE, that at least this particular type of poker is a game of skill? And therefore is NOT gambling?

Je suis Charlie

From Andrew Sullivan
“I am not afraid of retaliation. I have no kids, no wife, no car, no credit. It perhaps sounds a bit pompous, but I prefer to die standing than living on my knees,” – Stephane Charbonnier, the publishing director of Charlie Hebdo, killed this morning alongside 11 others.

From Jeffrey Goldberg
"Any outlet that censors Charlie Hebdo cartoons out of fear of Islamist reprisal is not Charlie."

I remember 9/17/01 when I watched the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange that my reaction when I heard the bell was "FUCK YOU OSAMA".

For years whenever I heard the opening or closing bell I repeated the words out loud "Fuck You Osama". As you can see my intensity had gone down a little.

Any assholes that kill like those idiots in Paris yesterday or those idiots who destroyed the Trade Center need to be condemned. I can understand hating the US or hating the writers of the magazine but there is a very bright line and these assholes are so far over the line that it is fair to say the assholes are wrong.

Wausau is famous

While I am at it, 449 Beatrice, which I think is one house east of Garrison on our side of the street, is also for sale for $400,000.

Dad sold his house for about $200,000 in 2001.

De Blasio

Have you been following what the cops are doing in NYC?

{With the incredible disrespect shown to New York’s Mayor de Blasio by the NYPD recently, it’s instructive to go back and reread what de Blasio said that sent New York’s finest into such a paroxysm of rage. Via Michael Tomasky:

This is profoundly personal for me. I was at the White House the other day, and the president of the United States turned to me, and he met Dante a few months ago, and he said that Dante reminded him of what he looked like as a teenager. And he said, I know you see this crisis through a very personal lens. I said to him I did. Because Chirlane and I have had to talk to Dante for years, about the dangers he may face. A good young man, a law-abiding young man, who would never think to do anything wrong, and yet, because of a history that still hangs over us, the dangers he may face—we’ve had to literally train him, as families have all over this city for decades, in how to take special care in any encounter he has with the police officers who are there to protect him.

Scrooged

I am sorry but I don't remember who got me the DVD as a gift. I'm pretty sure it was Sue or Lisa. It is one of the best gifts that I ever received. Thanks so much.

I know I am a schmuck. I pretty much have always been a schmuck. I am sorry that I am such a schmuck. I hope I will be less of a schmuck in the future.

The US is different

"Opioids now cause more deaths than any other drug, more than 16,000 in 2010. That year, the combination of hydrocodone and acetaminophen became the most prescribed medication in the United States. Patients here consumed 99 percent of the world’s hydrocodone, the opioid in Vicodin. They also consumed 80 percent of the world’s oxycodone, present in Percocet and OxyContin, and 65 percent of the world’s hydromorphone, the key ingredient in Dilaudid, in 2010. (Some opioids are also used to treat coughs, but that use doesn’t seem to be a major factor in the current wave of problems.)"
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/12/23/upshot/painkiller-abuse-a-cyclical-cha...

I wonder what makes the US so different that 99% of the hydrocodone is used by Americans. I assume it is that the maker of Vicodin decided not to sell to other first world countries at the price they were willing to pay.

Rick Perry

Recession Risk: JPMorgan indicates the plunge in oil below
$55 per barrel could push TX into a recession because of its
heavy exposure to crude.

The drop in oil is really bad news for Putin and Texas and Alaska.

Torture

http://dish.andrewsullivan.com/2014/12/23/americans-learn-to-stop-worryi...

Interesting that atheists are the biggest group against torture.

Of course, I have said for a long time that you can't be a Christian and a Republican at the same time.
